Discover why your Apple MacBook battery may display a “not charging” image despite actually charging, and learn effective solutions to resolve this common issue. Updated 2023

Understanding the Battery Not Charging Display Issue:

1.  Misinterpreted Battery Icon:

When your MacBook is plugged in and charging, the battery icon in the menu bar usually indicates the charging process with a lightning bolt symbol.

Some users have reported seeing the battery icon without the lightning bolt, creating the impression that the battery is not charging. This is often a visual glitch and does not reflect the actual charging.

2.  System Software Miscommunication:

At times, the macOS software responsible for displaying battery information may experience a temporary hiccup.

This can lead to inaccurate battery status being shown, even when the battery is charging as intended.

There are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve this issue.

Solutions to Fix the Battery Not Charging Display Issue:

1.  Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC):

The SMC is responsible for managing various hardware components in your MacBook, including the battery.

Resetting the SMC can help resolve power-related issues.

2.  Calibrating the Battery:

Calibrating the battery can help recalibrate the software responsible for reporting battery information accurately.

Start by fully charging your MacBook battery, then use it until the battery drains completely and the MacBook shuts down.

Finally, connect your charger and allow the battery to charge to 100% without interruption. This process can help reset the battery calibration and potentially resolve the incorrect display issue.

3.  Checking the Power Adapter and Cable:

Sometimes, the battery not charging display issue may be caused by a faulty power adapter or cable. Ensure that the power adapter is securely connected to both your MacBook and a functioning power outlet.

Battery Health Management is enabled by default, but it can be turned off by checking the Battery Health Management option in the Energy Saver section of the System Preferences app.  If the problem persists contact ZA Support for assistance.
